On April 29, the last American troops leave via helicopter from the roof of the US Embassy in Saigon. For the United States, the Vietnam War is officially over. In more than 10 years of fighting, 58,249 American troops have been killed.

On December 20, after a routine trip to his physician, Richard J. Daley dies of a heart attack. More 100,000 mourners attend his funeral in Bridgeport, on Chicago’s South Side.
